Spell and Type

Study a word card, watch it vanish, then type it from memory to build spelling and recall.

Controls

Press Enter to hide the word card. Type the word from memory. Press Tab to peek again for a small point cost. Backspace fixes a wrong letter.

Spell and Type: Hear It, Then Type It

Spell and Type is a memory-and-spelling game. A word is shown for a moment, then it disappears, and you have to type it from memory. It is a friendly way to build accurate spelling and quick recall at the same time.

How to play

Each round starts with a short word card. Study it for a few seconds, press Enter, and the word is hidden. Now type it exactly as you remember it. Correct words earn points and move you to the next card. If you are unsure, press Tab to peek again, but a peek costs a few points.

The core idea

The card stays on screen for less time as you level up, so your memory has to do more of the work. Words are grouped in themed sets such as animals, kitchen items and weather, which makes patterns easier to notice. Mistakes are shown after each round so you can see exactly which letters slipped.

Skills you practice

  • Spelling from memory instead of copying
  • Noticing common letter patterns like ight, tion and ough
  • Typing whole words in one steady burst
  • Staying calm when a word looks unfamiliar

For teachers and parents

This works well as a warm-up before a spelling quiz. Teachers can ask students to say each word out loud before typing. Parents can slow things down by choosing a longer preview time and celebrating accuracy over speed.

Tips for better play

Say the word quietly in syllables while it is on the card, then picture the letters before you press Enter. Chunking a long word into two or three pieces makes it far easier to hold in your head. If one pattern keeps tripping you up, replay that themed set until it feels natural.

Spelling grows fastest when you repeat words in short sessions, so try a few rounds each day. Browse more in Spelling Typing Games, see the full typing games list, or measure your speed with the typing test.

Frequently asked questions

Is Spell and Type free?
Yes. You can play every round in your browser with no account and no payment.
Do I have to remember long words?
Early sets use short words. Longer words only appear as you level up, and you can always peek once with Tab.
What if I forget a word?
Peek once with Tab, or skip the card. Skipped words come back later so you get another try.
Which ages is it for?
It suits roughly grades 2 to 6, and the word sets get longer and trickier as you progress.
Does it teach typing or spelling?
Both. You practice finger movement while strengthening how you remember letter order.
