Type Race

Race a field of computer drivers by typing short passages quickly and accurately to push your car down the track.

Controls

Type the passage to drive your car forward. Backspace corrects a wrong letter. Enter starts the next race.

Your fingers are the engine

In Type Race, every correct letter is a push on the gas. A short passage appears under your car, and you race against several computer-controlled opponents by typing it from start to finish. The faster and cleaner you type, the faster your car moves, and the first one over the finish line takes the trophy.

How to play Type Race

Wait for the lights to count down, then begin typing the passage shown on screen. Correct letters light up and your car moves forward. A wrong letter stays marked until you fix it, so press Backspace and try again. You cannot move on past a mistake, which teaches you that accuracy is part of speed.

Rival drivers

The computer racers each have their own pace. Some start fast and tire, while others build up slowly. Beating all of them on an easy track is a great first goal, and moving to a harder track with longer passages is the natural next step. After each race you see your speed in words per minute and your accuracy, so you can tell whether you won by skill or by luck.

Skills you will build

  • Steady rhythm over a whole sentence instead of short bursts.
  • Typing punctuation and capital letters in real text.
  • Keeping your eyes on the text rather than your hands.
  • Handling the nerves of a head-to-head contest.

For teachers and parents

Races are short, which makes them handy as a warm-up or a reward at the end of a lesson. Encourage learners to focus on their own score, not on winning every time. To see how a race result compares with a longer effort, try the typing test.

Frequently asked questions

Do I race real people?
No. Your opponents are computer drivers, so there is no chat and nothing to worry about for younger players.
Why can't I skip a wrong letter?
The race only moves when the current letter is right. This builds the habit of accurate typing, which is the fastest way to improve.
How is my speed shown?
At the end of each race you see words per minute and accuracy. A word counts as five characters.
Which passages are used?
The game uses short original sentences and common sayings, from easy lines up to longer, harder ones.
