Beat Racer

Type in time and the car speeds up

Beat Racer mixes a racing game with a rhythm game. Your car speeds along a glowing neon road while a steady beat plays in the background, and a word waits for you on screen. Finish the word in time with the beat and the car surges forward. It teaches that fast typing is also even typing.

How to play Beat Racer

Type the word shown on screen, then watch the beat marker. If you finish the word right on the beat, the game scores it Perfect or Good and your car gets a speed boost. If you finish off the beat, nothing bad happens: the car just keeps its normal speed. A wrong key is counted as a mistake and flashes, but it never blocks you, so type the next correct letter. The game has sound, and audio starts after your first key press. Esc pauses the game and the beat waits with you.

Laps and ghost cars

You race three laps against three ghost cars. They drive at a fixed pace, so the only way to get ahead is to boost often. When you cross the finish line you get a ranking from first to last, along with how many Perfect and Good hits you managed. If you stop typing, the car stays at normal speed and the race still ends when the ghost cars finish.

Skills you will build

• Typing words at an even, steady tempo.
• Matching your keystrokes to a beat.
• Reading the next word while finishing the current one.
• Keeping accuracy high while moving quickly.

For teachers and parents

Beat Racer is a good bridge between slow, careful typing and faster typing, because it rewards rhythm rather than raw speed. Suggest that learners tap their foot gently with the beat. For a speed baseline, use the typing test alongside it.
