Thirty seconds, one fast check

The 30 second typing test is the shortest run on the site. It is useful as a warm-up, as a quick check after a lesson, or when you only have a moment. You can choose Words, the default, or Sentences. Words keep the focus on raw key speed, while sentences add capitals and punctuation.

How your score is calculated

Your speed is shown in WPM, words per minute. A "word" here is a standard five characters, so the count does not depend on how long your words happen to be. The engine takes the characters you typed correctly, including correct spaces, divides by 5, then divides by the minutes you spent typing. In this 30 second test, 100 correct characters is 20 words, and 20 words in half a minute is 40 WPM.

Accuracy is the number of correct keystrokes divided by all the keystrokes you made. A wrong letter that you fix with Backspace still counts as a keystroke, so careful typing at a steady pace usually beats rushing and correcting. With only half a minute of typing, the engine scales your result to a full minute, so one slow start can pull the number down. That is why short tests are best read as a rough guide.

When a 30 second test makes sense

Use it to warm up your fingers before a longer session, to compare two keyboards quickly, or to see whether a small habit change, such as a better seating position, helps. If you need a result you can trust more, take the one minute typing test or the 3 minute typing test, which smooth out slow starts.

Reading your result

After the timer ends, look at both numbers together. A high WPM with low accuracy means you are rushing, and a high accuracy with a lower WPM means you have room to speed up. The best plan is to raise accuracy first and let speed follow. Try to type a little each day, even for five minutes, and track your WPM and accuracy from one session to the next. Small steady gains add up, and comparing against your own earlier scores is more useful than comparing against other people.

Tips for a short test

  • Read the first few words before you start so you do not stall at the beginning.
  • Do not speed up so much that accuracy falls. Errors cost time too.
  • Keep your eyes a word or two ahead of your fingers.
  • Take two or three runs and look at the best and the average.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 30 second test accurate?
It gives a quick estimate. Because it is so short, one slow start affects the result, so a longer test is better for a steadier number.
How is the score scaled?
WPM is correct characters, including correct spaces, divided by 5 and then by the minutes used. Thirty seconds is half a minute, so the character count is doubled in that calculation.
Can I use sentences instead of words?
Yes. Switch between Words and Sentences above the text.
Is it free?
Yes, with no account needed.
